Snow load: significance and impact on PV systems

Photovoltaic systems are particularly challenged in winter. Find out what effects snow loads can have on your system.

February 3, 2026 | 7:32 a.m.

Photovoltaic systems are exposed to wind and weather every day. Winter is particularly demanding on the material, as heavy snow loads increase the pressure on panels, substructures, and roofs. How can you prevent damage?

Our photovoltaic systems must be well equipped for snowy winter days. Whether on the roof or in open spaces, precipitation lands on the modules. Snow is particularly challenging. The beautiful white stuff that brings us so much joy in winter can be quite heavy when it settles on solar panels.

Although statistically speaking, the number of days with snowfall is decreasing in our region, winters like that of 2010 show that snow loads are important factors in the planning of sustainable systems. By snow load, we mean the effect of snow on a building or structure.

Why are snow loads so dangerous for photovoltaic systems?

Heavy snow masses exert enormous pressure on the modules, the mountings, and the roof. On sloping roofs, icy snow slabs and roof avalanches can pose a danger to people, animals, and equipment located around the building. Especially on flat roofs, where snow cannot slide off, it poses a risk to the roof strength and stability of the building. One cubic meter of fresh snow can weigh between 30 and 50 kg. If the snow is already compacted or even wet, 300 kg per cubic meter is not unusual. If layers of snow have already turned into ice sheets, even an apparently small blanket of snow can develop enormous weight. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance explains how homeowners can protect their roofs and buildings from snow loads.

Snow loads pressing down on a photovoltaic system can cause mechanical damage. Snow loads can cause microcracks in glass-foil modules, which impair both the performance and service life of the modules. In view of current market developments and the increasing use of glass-glass modules, special requirements are placed on the substructure due to their higher dead weight and lower load-bearing capacity. High-quality, structurally optimized installation is crucial to reduce mechanical stress, prevent module breakage, and ensure long-term system safety.

The particular challenges in snowy regions

Heavy snowfall is not uncommon, especially in southern Germany and the Alpine regions. The additional weight that can be placed on a system in winter must be included in the calculation of the total roof load. Modules and substructures designed for high snow loads should be used here in order to prevent damage. If this is not taken into account when planning a system, the resulting pressure can, in the worst case, cause the roof to collapse.

PMT – Your partner for safe and durable photovoltaic systems
As specialists in mounting systems, we offer tailor-made solutions for every roof shape – with a particular focus on potential snow loads and the load-bearing capacity of the modules used. Our PMT X118 andPMT EVO GREEN substructuresPMT EVO GREEN designed for all wind and snow load zones found in Europe.

In thePMT EVO GREEN system, the new cross-brace connection, which can also be used flexibly in the upper position,PMT EVO GREEN increased load-bearing capacity of the modules. In the PMT X118 system, the load is optimally transferred to the module by the central clamping, which also significantly increases its load-bearing capacity.

The high quality and reliability of our components is confirmed by the general building approval of our systems. In addition, we underline our quality promise to our customers with a 15-year warranty.

This is how important building protection is for PV systems

Building protection: more than just a basis for PV systems

Find out how innovative approaches can be used to minimize friction losses and damage to roofing membranes.

11 March 2025 | 11:48

Challenges in building protection

When protecting roof cladding and PV system substructures, problems often arise that are exacerbated by the choice of unsuitable protective materials:

Materials such as aluminum are subject to temperature-induced contractions and expansions of up to 1 mm per meter length, which can endanger the stability of PV systems in the long term. In addition, vibrations caused by machines or wind lead to mechanical movements in the substructure, which increases the material load and can cause damage. Commonly used building protection materials such as fleece materials, EPDM mats and rubber granules have various weaknesses, including a lack of weather resistance, compaction over time and susceptibility to bird damage.

PMT Pro-& Easy Plate: The solution for long-term protection

With the Pro-&EasyPlate, PMT offers an innovative solution that has been specially developed to meet the requirements of PV systems. The plate is made of high-density polyethylene (PEHD), a material with outstanding physical properties:

  • High abrasion resistance: Due to a high Shore hardness (= scratch hardness); the higher the scratch hardness, the lower the abrasion.
  • Adapted material structure: The innovative design of the plate minimizes the contact surface with the roof cladding and thus reduces friction effects.

In addition, extensive tests simulate over 25 years of use. The plate is tested under realistic conditions - a unique procedure on the market.

Conclusion: safety and quality combined

With the Pro-&Easy Plate, PMT offers a solution that is characterized by reliability and innovation. All tests, including adhesion and abrasion tests, have been successfully passed on a wide variety of roofing membranes. This confirms PEHD as the ideal material for building protection.

PMT supports SALEM in Stadtsteinach

We are donating 1,000 euros to the aid organization SALEM.

| 7:32

Once again this year, we at PMT - Premium Mounting Technologies - have made a conscious decision to forego customer gifts and instead make a contribution to our region. Among others, we chose the local aid organization SALEM, whose headquarters have been in Stadtsteinach since 1969.

Support for "AmbulantBetreute Einzelwohnen"
Our donation will benefit SALEM's "Ambulant Betreute Einzelwohnen" , which has been supporting people with mental illnesses and disabilities in almost all of Upper Franconia with the challenges of everyday life for over 15 years. The dedicated team provides individual and needs-based help - whether it's with visits to the doctor, visits to the authorities or finding an apartment or job.

Specifically, our donation will be used to set up a one-bedroom apartment in SALEM-Stadtsteinach, which can be occupied by assisted people and allows them more independence. There is a great need for this type of accommodation, and there are even plans for a sheltered housing community in the future to provide a safe home for even more people in difficult life situations.

Taking responsibility together
"As a local company, it is particularly important to us to strengthen social interaction in Stadtsteinach. SALEM has been doing valuable work here for decades, which we would like to support with our donation of 1,000 euros out of deepest conviction," explains Jörg Weber-Schorsch, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at PMT.

We hope that our commitment will inspire others to also do good and support regional aid projects - be it through a donation or simply by drawing attention to the valuable work of organizations like SALEM. Because together we can make a difference - for our fellow human beings and our community.

A strong signal for our environment

Our tree donation of 888 trees successfully implemented

09 December 2024 | 7:32

A year ago, we set an important example for climate protection and the reforestation of our region: In collaboration with Radio Plassenburg and the fit4future Wald Oberfranken initiative, we donated 888 trees for a planting area in Rugendorf.

Now the time had come: one of our managing directors, Jörg Weber-Schorsch, visited our planted trees together with Radio Plassenburg and the responsible forester to see the progress on site.

An impressive project
A total of 1,800 trees were planted in the area - 888 of them thanks to our donation. "We are actively involved in various environmental projects, but this donation is something very special. Here we can experience first-hand how much work and passion the foresters put into planting and caring for the trees. It's impressive to see how much commitment is needed to allow these little trees to grow into a healthy forest," says Jörg Weber-Schorsch, Chief Operating Officer at PMT.

Our contribution to climate neutrality
With our donation, we are not only making an active contribution to reforestation, but also offsetting a person's carbon footprint. At the same time, the project highlights the importance of regional and sustainable measures for climate protection - a guiding principle that also plays a central role in our strategic decisions and supply chains.

Become a tree hero and support nature with every tree donation. You can find more information about the initiative here.

This is how big the PV market is

Photovoltaics is one of the pillars of the energy transition. How is the goal of making extensive use of solar energy to combat climate change progressing? And what role do substructures play in the efficiency and sustainability of a photovoltaic system?

08 November 2024 | 8:32

2023 was already considered a record year for photovoltaic expansion. Over one million photovoltaic systems and more than 500,000 storage systems were installed, according to the German Solar Industry Association. These are important steps in terms of the energy transition target. After all, a quarter of Germany's electricity needs are to be covered by photovoltaic power by 2030.

For this to succeed, growing environmental awareness, government guidelines and technological advances must be coordinated. A total of 81.4 GW of photovoltaic capacity is installed in Germany. An expansion to 215 GW is necessary to achieve the target. A high target that requires land, investment and people. According to the BMWK, 84,100 people were working in the solar industry in Germany in 2022. In 2011, there were almost twice as many. After the sharp market slump in the 2010s, the industry is slowly recovering.

However, the international stage has not stood still in recent years. New photovoltaic capacity installed worldwide rose by an average of 40 percent per year between 2020 and 2023. According to Bloomberg NEF 2023, this amounted to around 400 gigawatts of capacity alone. Falling module prices are one of the factors contributing to this. In many countries, PV energy is by far one of the cheapest forms of electricity supply. Germany has long since ceded its pioneering role to China. With 250 GW of newly installed capacity, the country is now responsible for 60 percent of global photovoltaic growth. With a total output of over 660 GW, China has left the number 2 in the table, the USA with 169 GW, far behind. Germany has slipped to 5th place.

The growing demand for PV systems

But more important than rankings and comparisons is the potential that our country has to offer. Without having to come into conflict with agriculture or nature conservation, as often proclaimed by critics, Germany could easily achieve the expansion target, emphasizes the report "Current Facts on Photovoltaics" by the Fraunhofer Institute. In the building sector alone, there is the technical potential for 1000 GW. Only ten percent of the roof potential is currently being used. Innovations are increasingly making it possible to convert existing and challenging buildings to renewable energy sources safely and sustainably. There is therefore economic development potential in this field, from which the economy, the labor market and ultimately the people will benefit.

The decisive role of high-quality assembly systems

Photovoltaic systems are a long-term investment. They should work as smoothly as possible for at least 20 years on the roof or as a ground-mounted system exposed to wind and weather. At the same time, they are expected to generate energy with maximum output. As users, we want to be able to rely on this. It is therefore not only the module and storage solutions that are constantly evolving, becoming more efficient and safer. A lot is also happening on the PV market in the area of substructures.

This is also necessary. With further expansion in Germany and other countries, the focus is also shifting to surfaces and roofs that pose particular challenges. Substructures must protect the surface and the roof and at the same time help to ensure the safety of the installation teams. At the same time, the core tasks must not take a back seat:

  • Structural integrity: A stable and durable mounting system is critical to withstand the forces of wind, snow and other environmental factors.
  • Increased energy yield: A correctly installed mounting system can optimize the energy output of a PV system by ensuring optimal alignment and tilt of the photovoltaic modules. This can lead to increased energy production and a better return on investment.
  • Increased safety: A well-designed installation system is crucial for the safety of both installers and building users.

Our teams work every day to test our solutions and improve them based on customer feedback and our experience. It is no coincidence that our PMT EVO 2.0, PMT EVO 2.1 and PMT X118 solutions have received general building authority approval. In this way, we are helping to ensure that the industry can continue to develop in a sustainable direction.
